Synodality in Action with Butterfly Effect

The author is a former member of the International Theological Commission. The article was
originally an address to the priests of the diocese of Tuticorin, 21 September 2021.

Synodality has become an important ecclesial discourse increasingly since the arrival of Pope
Francis on the scene. It has gained greater momentum since his announcement of a synod on
synodality to take place in October 2023. The theme is formulated as “For a Synodal Church:
Communion, Participation, and Mission.” The pope, in fact, underlines the epochal significance of
the issue of synodality by projecting it as the way for the Church in the Third Millennium - a macro-
vision indeed. For him, the synod is a process of inverting the pyramidal Church. There is a two-
year interval for reflection on this pivotal issue based on the experiences and aspirations of the local
Churches in different parts of the globe. A preparatory document for the synod (instrumentum
laboris) along with a Handbook (vademecum) with questions to facilitate reflections and
discernment at the local Churches was released by the Vatican on 7 September 2021. A revised draft
of the Preparatory Document is expected closer to the date of the synod.

The present article intends to reflect on the ecclesial and social contexts in which the discourse on
synodality is taking place, the shift of accent and expansion that have occurred in its understanding,
and the dynamics involved in synodality for the life, communion, governance, and mission of the
Church. It also highlights the need to be attentive to the anthropological foundation for the
functioning of synodality. Pope Francis is concerned about beginning the right processes and not
