A Brief History
We, the Capuchins were invited by late and former bishop of Tuticorin Most Rev. Thomas Fernando D.D. in the year 1968 to work at Amalinagar and thereafter he invited and given the present place in the year 1970 to start our friary and to do the pastoral ministry in and around the diocese. By the blessings of God, we started to build the present church in the year 1973 with the generous contribution of the people of Thoothukkudi and with the votive offerings of bricks carried and given by the people, a spacious church was completed after two years (1975) and His Grace John Carton, Nuncio of India laid foundation stone for the church in the presence of late former bishof of Tuticorin Most. Rev. Ambrose Mathalaimuthu D.D. Rev. Fr. Esebius of the capchin order was appointed as the caretaker priest of the newly marked parish of St. Jude, Millerpuam on 26th March 1976. In the beginning 20 villages were given to be taken care of by the capuchins. On 27th Decemeber 1992 the parish of St. Jude was cannonically erected by Bishop S.T. Amalnather and was entrusted to the capuchins. Rev. Fr. Mathias (OFM. Cap.) was the firs parish priest.
