SACRED HEART HOSPITAL, TUTICORIN
SAGA – 1960 – 2023
Origin: Sacred Heart Hospital is managed by the sisters of St. Ann of Luzern, Bangalore Province. Ours is an international congregation founded by Rev. Fr. Fr. Wilhelm Meyer in 1909 in Switzerland to take care of women, children and the sick – more specifically the expectant mothers and newborn babies. It is our first hospital in Tamil Nadu, started as a dispensary in 1960 at the solicitation of Late Bishop Thomas Fernando the then Bishop of Tuticorin Diocese. It developed in leaps and bounds and by 1971 Sacred Heart Hospital was a full-fledged general hospital with a capacity of 150 beds and currently 200 beds.

Vision: To uphold the sanctity of the person and to build a healthy society where people especially, the poor and the sick attain and maintain wholistic wellbeing and live in harmony with the creator and the creation.

Mission: To ensure life in its fulness after the example of Jesus’ compassionate love, we envisage to reveal Jesus the Healer to the suffering humanity.

Patients are the very important persons in our hospital. They give us opportunities to serve them and earn God’s blessings. So we dedicate our human resources and infrastructure to their welfare. As per the decision of our Society we give 10% of our total income as free and concession for the deserving poor patients. Psycho-spiritual needs of patients are met through pastoral care and counseling. The hospital is blessed with 15 regular doctors and 28 visiting consultants in various specialty.
Sacred Heart Hospital is a recognized hospital for the medical attendance and treatment of the Central Government employees and members of their families under Rule 2(d) of the CS(MA) Rules, 1944 and orders.  Re-imbursement of expenses incurred by the Central Government employees for the treatment in this hospital will be made in accordance with the schedule of charges of the hospital. Hospital also is empaneled to a few private health Insurance schemes. The hospital has the credit of accreditation from National Accreditation Board for Hospitals since December 2021.

Recognizing the need for trained professional nurses to provide efficient health care, School of Nursing was started in 1974 with the General Nursing and Midwifery course and College of Nursing in 2010 to train B.Sc. Nurses.  The infrastructure of the hospital is adequate to provide practical experiences for the trainees.

The hospital has grown by God’s grace and due to the committed contribution of our Management, Doctors, Nurses and staff of all departments.
